Summer Skills – Reading Workshop

(Session times: 7:30-9:30 a.m. or 10:00 – 12:00 p.m.– 2 hours from June 13 – 24)

The Summer Skills Reading Workshop meets the needs of many beginning high school students; it is a course that focuses on improving strategies for reading and writing effectively. The course is intended to help students make the transition from middle school to high school, and it sets a foundation for reading and writing in high school English, as well as in other subjects.

The course will provide opportunities for guided practice of the following reading strategies: making predictions, reading closely, annotating for comprehension and using context clues to develop vocabulary. In addition, the course will provide opportunities for students to practice writing sentences in a variety of structures and styles that show and don’t tell and use specific language. Students will also practice identifying and avoiding common grammatical mistakes, and using supporting evidence to write about literature. This course is not a remedial reading/writing course; it offers the opportunity to develop and strengthen reading and writing skills and strategies.

Materials needed: 1 Folder with pockets, loose leaf paper, pens, pencils, highlighters and Post-it notes, a dictionary, and the novel Rebecca by Daphne DuMaurier.
