Summer Is Great Time To Give Your Kids A Head Start On The New Year
Summer time is almost here. Most parents think of the summer as a time for their kids to run around, go to camp and go to the beach. We should also be thinking of what our kids will do from an academic standpoint. Student who do nothing academic during the summer will lose 2 1/2 months of academic gains in the summer. Student, however, who have at least 30 minutes of academic stimulus during the summer will make gains. But this will not happen if we don't have a plan. Make sure that your child has reading goals during the summer. Reading ensures gains in comprehension, vocabulary, critical thinking, spelling, fluency and reading rates. Make sure that your kids are reading daily. Make it a point to incorporate visits to the library as part of summer routine. Have your child write a summary of what they have read so that they can apply their writing skills. Have your child practice their math facts during the summer. There are countless free websites where they can spend a few minutes a day working on their math. Alternatively, you can buy a workbook at your local bookstore and have your child complete a few pages per week. If you child had a difficult year, get them help in the summer. This is a great opportunity to make huge academic gains and get them ready for the new year. Last summer we had students who made 2 and 3 grade level gains in the summer. This will boast their skill level but also their confidence and motivation. (If you need any help, please give me a call at The Huntington Learning Center 305.443.8408.) And remember to make sure that they have A LOT of fun. They should be spending time running around being kids. And when ever possible, we should be out there with them. The summer of 09 will only be here this year. Make sure that it is a summer that your kids will never forget.
